In a 12th century building with ancient furnishings and an art gallery, it offers, among others, a very special menu completely inspired by the scent and flavor of the famous lemons of Amalfi.
A family story ...
The restaurant La Caravella was founded in 1959. It was the first restaurant in the south of Italy to be awarded with the Michelin Guide Star in the 60s. "Sixty years ago, in 1959, father Franco, mother Anna and her brother decided to open, with few resources and many debts, a quality restaurant with an adjoining pizzeria,“ La Caravella ”. It was a quality trattoria. The furnishings and spaces of the restaurant today are similar to the original ones, preserved during the many restorations and technological improvements. The floor today is of very rare marble, Verona red, curly plasters, dream of many architects, the centenary and frescoed ceilings; the fabrics covering the restaurant are silks from San Leucio of Alois, the 18th century factory, supplier of the Vatican and many Royal Houses; Richard Ginori's porcelain, Sambonet silverware designed by Giò Ponti, Murano crystals, are treasures. In the 60s the Caravella proudly represented the meeting point of the Grand Tour on the Amalfi Coast, the place where tumultuous loves were born, where never revealed agreements were signed, where everything contributed to making the Amalfi Coast what it is today, one of the best known and most admired places in the world. I started in 1987, after some experiences around the world; luckily for me, the way was already paved. Thanks to mum and dad, in 1969 we were the first restaurant to receive the first star from the Michelin guide of Southern Italy, lost in the 80s and regained by me in the 90s. It was in those years that I felt the change in direction of Italian catering: I began to change from trattoria to restaurant, and I realized my dream: the cellar with temperature and humidity control - an innovation at the time - with many illustrious colleagues calling me crazy. My passion was mistaken for madness, instead I had simply anticipated the times: the food-wine-art union has now become the winning formula of all excellent restaurateurs. "
Unique in the world
The structure of the restaurant today is similar to that of 1959, but with evident restorations and technological improvements. The reconstruction of the ancient frescoed ceilings has acquired even more value thanks to a restoration that lasted almost 15 years. An added value, then, is our private collection, kept in the restaurant with works by the most celebrated artists of the Coast, considered one of the most important in the world, making this restaurant unique and magical.
Innovation and Tradition
La Caravella is the undisputed gastronomic icon of the Coast of Amalfi. Since 2 July 1959, from our first steps, nothing changed, every step has served to reinforce our promise of quality.
The Paradise of the Ciucci
The renovation of the ancient ceilings lasted almost 15 years, finished in 2019 with the Paradise of the Ciucci, in the kitchen.
