From there, along Salita San Nicola dei Greci, we reach the Vagliendola district, which retains all the typical characteristics of the ancient town of Amalfi among the buildings developed in height and in the alleys intertwining with each other and often overlooking the sea. Here we will find the fascinating remains of the Church of San Bartolomeo and a moorish style domus from the 12th century. Going up to Largo Spirito Santo, we can visit Museo della Carta, with its unique findings of the centuries old history of the famous cotton wool of Amalfi. The Museum building also marks the beginning of the area of ancient paper mills in the Valle dei Mulini.
More Info about Museo della Carta
The Paper Museum of Amalfi is in an ancient paper mill that dates back to the 13th century.
This structure, unique in the world, offers to its visitors the magic of going back in time and directly experiencing the ancient techniques of paper production during guided tours in Italian, English, German, French and Spanish.
It’s possibile to admire the centuries old machines used in the production of handmade paper: the ancient wooden hammers which, driven by a water wheel, used to crush and shred linen, cotton and hemp rags previously collected in the mighty stone piles; the Dutch machine installed in the paper mill on November 18, 1745; the 18th century presses used to remove excess of water from the sheets; the machine continues in circles. All these paper making machines have been restored and made functional, and are operated during the visit with the force of the water of the Canneto, allowing us to relive the thrill of creating a sheet of the precious handmade paper of Amalfi.
